Fall Detector Alarm

If you are like me, chances are you have heard of a Fall Detector Alarm but may not be familiar with why a person would use such a device. Emergencies can occur without any warning, more so for the elderly. Fall detection technology can help in these types of situations. These medical alert systems can be lifesaving and assist a patient if they cannot press their help button after a fall or during an emergency. Let’s take a closer look at fall detector alarms and why they are so vital for the senior members of your family.

What are Fall Detector Alarms?

A fall detector alarm or personal emergency alarm is a compact, portable, lightweight device. This alarm will automatically employ technology to identify a fall and request rapid assistance following preset protocols.

A user can summon help without the need to press the help button. Typically they are worn on the neck or around the wrist. People who have just been discharged from hospital and who may require additional support can really benefit from carrying a fall detector alarm., Patients diagnosed with a medical condition such as diabetes, epilepsy or people with limited mobility or who suffer from a disability can benefit greatly from these devices. A fall detector alarm is useful in assisting the elderly or young, fit people who may be working in a hazardous environment by themselves.

If you want to ensure your family members are protected at all times, especially those senior in years, then an automatic fall alarm is invaluable. In the event of a fall or emergency, you will be able to locate loved ones. Bed sensors are commonly used for the elderly. However, these devices cannot detect falls from a bed which is very common. A fall detector alarm will detect a fall regardless of where the fall occurs.

 How Fall Detector Alarms Work?

Fall alarms must be able to reliably detect a fall, and they use an internal device called an accelerometer to achieve this. More advanced fall detectors use triple-axis accelerometers that are also used in smartwatches and smartphones. They provide these devices to utilize low power radio wave sensor technology, which monitors the movements of a user. A sudden change in body movement can assess and measure if the user has suddenly taken a fall and will be identified by the fall monitor.

The body position of the user can be evaluated, as can the acceleration and smoothness of movement, including physical exertion or activity. The alarm will automatically activate an emergency fall alert if a fall occurs.

If a fall is detected by the alarm, the following steps will be performed:

  1. The alarm identifies a fall has taken place
  2. The device initiates calling the registered contact phone numbers that have been programmed until one of the contacts answers
  3. A person on the registered contact list will also receive a text message along with the user’s location with a Google maps link.
  4. Like a mobile phone, the user can talk with the person who has answered the phone.

Will the Alarm work if there is no cellular coverage?

Medical alert devices that feature automatic fall detection typically are designed to be stand-alone devices with their own SIM card and usually don’t need to rely on WIFI or any other device network. They are designed to work in an emergency situation and don’t rely on another device to communicate with. They are very similar to a mobile phone using a SIM card and mobile network. So when there is mobile network coverage, they should work. These devices are for emergencies and should never be used to communicate socially like a mobile phone. Fall detection alarms have saved many lives and are a remarkable piece of technology.
